Spyware And Your Security

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

If you want to know more about the threats and dangers pose by spyware, I strongly suggest that you keep reading. There are some real risks that you need to know about, like how spyware can violate your online privacy, and even steal your personal details for use in crime. You can lose a lot of money if the wrong people get their hands on your credit card details!

Spyware is more of a problem than most people think. In 2005, 62% of all computers were infected with Spyware - by now, it is more. This means that you are quite likely to be already infected, even if you think that you are safe.

Spyware is software that is installed on your computer without your knowledge. It is designed to secretly monitor your actions, record what you do, and to copy the information that yo type or save on your computer. When you are connected to the Internet, it makes a secret connection to a server and sends this information back home to the designer. This person can now use this information for his own purposes - which are usually criminal.

The spyware also is often used to display advertising to you. It does this by first analysing your behaviour - what sites you visit, what links you click on, what you buy, your demographics, interests, etc. When it has a good idea of what you will buy, it will start displaying ads to you. Usually this advertising is quite blatant, in the form of flashing pop-ups that appear every minute or so. Sometimes it is more subtle, such as banner ads that appear on websites that do not normally have banner ads.

Whatever form this advertising takes, it is intrusive and can be very annoying, or even disturbing.

The bigger threat is in the form of personal information which can be stolen. It is very easy for a computer program to search through all the files of your computer looking for a certain pattern - such as a credit card number. When it finds this information, it can send it to the remote server. Add this to the address and other details it is able to extract, and the spyware designer will rapidly be able to gather enough information to steal money from you, or to open up a bank account in your name.

This account then will be used to commit fraud, and you will usually be left to blame as the person responsible. This can be extremely damaging to you, and difficult to prove.

We have looked at how spyware can pose a serious threat to you. We’ve seen how it is used to spy on you, bombard you with unwanted adverts and even to steal your money or identity. I’m sure you’ll agree - this is a serious threat, and one you would be happy to avoid. Unfortunately, there is a better than even chance that your computer is already infected.

What you need to do now is get software to detect spyware. Trying to perform a adware spyware scan yourself is nearly impossible, as the spyware is designed to avoid detection. Luckily, the anti-spyware programs are designed to do this automatically. If you are worried about price, there are even free spyware detector programs that you can use.

Spyware - Its Effects And How To Cure Them

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

If you are concerned about the effects of spyware, you will be interested in this article. What I am going to cover here is the specific effects that spyware has on your computer. I’m going to give you a bit of background information about spyware, before covering how it threatens you personally. I’m also going to cover the advertising that Spyware bombards onto infected computers. By the end of the article, you will know a lot more about spyware and the risks entailed.

Spyware is a fairly recent phenomenon, and it does not have a long and detailed history. In 2000, a company called Zone Labs released an updated version of their popular firewall program, known as Zone Alert. In a press release describing the software, the term Spyware was used for the first time. By 2005, 62% of all Internet users have become infected. This means that there is a better than even chance that you have been infected, too! Most people who are infected (over 90% according to AOL) are unaware of the infection.

In balance, the threat posed by spyware is considered to be one of the greatest ever faced by Internet users.

But what is the nature of the threat? What does the spyware actually do?

Well, firstly, it is possible to design the spyware to help commit identity theft! The spyware can extract personal information from your computer, and send it on to another computer where it will allow someone to steal your identity, and act in your name.

Also, it allows people to steal your credit card details. It is very easy for a program to recognise the exact pattern of a credit card being typed in - it can then collect all the accompanying data, such as name, address and security code. This can then be used by a hacker to make purchases that you will be left having to pay for.

Finally, spyware can be used to install dialers on your computer. These are evil programs that force your computer to connect to the Internet over a premium rate or international phone line - extorting you for huge sums of money through your phone bill! This threat is rarer due to the widespread use of broadband, but it still exists!

So, as you can see, there are some very real threats posed by adware. Not all adware is this dangerous - some is quite “benign” by comparison. This is the software that spies on you and then “helps” you by showing you “useful” adverts.

Most of this advertising is actually extremely annoying. It usually takes the form of pop-ups, which may appear every minute or so, or when you open a new window, or when you click a link. Sometimes it appears even when you are not connected to the Internet!

Some of these ads can be extremely offensive or inappropriate - such as child pornography, or illegal software cracks. This can be extremely upsetting for end users, especially on a home computer.

Finally, there is parasitic advertising, where adverts on a web site are replaced by adverts belonging to the spyware designer. This can cause problems to the website owners, who are denied income from advertisers. But it can also cause a problem for you, as you are shown adverts that appear to be from reputable companies, but are not.

So, as you can see, spyware is a massive pain in the butt. We’ve looked at the rapid growth of spyware infection, how it threatens you personally, and how it can make your computer hell to use with constant ads bombarding it. Given these threats, I suggest that you check out some spyware software reviews on the Internet to see what you can do about it!

There are security tools, such as a spyware bot that you can use to clean up your computer. This can be a considerable help, because the spyware removing process can be nearly impossibly complicated when it is done by hand!

Spyware And Adware - Risks To Be Aware Of

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

If you have recently been experiencing difficulties on your computer, then this article has some important news for you. Often, this performance degradation is caused by spyware. I’m going to be discussing the specific effects spyware can have on your system - how it can ruin your computer’s performance, how it can open up the door to further infection, and what vulnerabilities in your computer make this possible. By the time you have finished this article, you will have a good idea of the risks posed by spyware and what to do about them!

When your computer becomes infected by spyware, one of the first signs that you will notice is degraded performance. For many users, this can mean that the computer has become much slower, leading them to believe that it is time to upgrade to a new computer. This is caused by the spyware tying up the system resources - the disk, CPU and network access are often tied up by the resource hungry spyware, leaving little left over for the user’s programs to use. This makes your computer run like treacle uphill!

Another problem is that the Internet connection can become disrupted - you may find yourself being disconnected from the Internet, or have lots of “time out” errors. You may even find that you cannot connect to the Internet at all. This is happening because the spyware is interfering with the network software that all the other programs on your computer rely upon. It can even copy its own code into the network software to protect against Spyware removing.

Also, you need to watch out for the problem of computer instability. What this means is how likely your computer is to crash. This is caused by poor programming by the spyware designers - when the spyware effects other programs as well as itself. Therefore, if it crashes, it will take other programs down too. This can cause you to loose work because you will not be able to save it before the computer crashes.

But if these problems were annoying, the other threats posed by spyware are positively scary.

There are more and more reports coming in of spyware that not only infects your computer - it disables your security software to prevent itself from being discovered and to open the door to further infection! The spyware can disable your firewalls, making it impossible to detect the hidden traffic caused by the spyware reporting back home. It can shut down your anti virus software. It can even advertise your computer’s weakened state to hostile crackers all over the Internet.

All of these effects leave your computer open to infection and can ultimately lead to your computer becoming infected with so much malware that it is impossible to keep it running! This is why software like the spyware bot is so popular!

I’m sure you are wondering how spyware manges to find its way onto your computer in the first place. What are the particular weaknesses that allow this to happen? While this article is too short to cover them all - indeed there are entire sitres dedicated to the subject - I can tell you that most of these weaknesses are relate to a single piece of software. In fact, this software has more recorded security weaknesses that any other peice of wideley used software. It is called Windows, and most computer owners use it all the time.

There are several specific weaknesses in Windows that allow this to happen. The first is Internet Explorer, IE is insecure because of the causual way it allows extra software to be installed on your computer, often in the form of ActiveX controls.

For instance, every time you watch an online video, it is running inside an activeX control. This is an example of a non-malicious use of the ActiveX mechanism.

However, spyware and other malware can use the ActiveX mechanism to infect a computer, by embedding itself into a web page. When the user visits the web page, they are prompted to install the activeX control. Most users will simply click on “OK”, ignoring (or simply unaware of) the risks involved. in other cases, javascript on the page forces the spyware to be installed.

Outlook express is far from blame free - in fact, this is a second main path of infection. Most Windows users rely on Outlook Express to read their emails. These emails can become infected with malware. Within Outlook Express, the Internet Explorer is used to display the email messages. This means that many of the weaknesses of IE can be exploited within emails - a risk that most internet users are unaware of.

Finally, there are the risks posed by the setup of Windows itself. By default, the computer user is a fully authorised system administrator. These means that the user can configure any setting on the computer. However, this also means that any program that the user runs can do the same. So, when the spyware is run, it can easily take control of the computer and change all of the most secure settings with ease.

As you can see, in its standards configuration, windows is quite insecure.

So, with all these different threats, I’m sure you will agree that there is a real need to protect yourself against the spyware that is out there. We’ve seen how spyware can harm your computer’s performance, reduce its security settings, and what weaknesses in your system make it possible to get infected with spyware to start with. Luckily, there sis special anti-spyware software that you can install to clean up your computer and prevent infections in the future. It is aware of these weaknesses and is able to patch them up and prevent infection. To find out more, you should read up on a Spyware software review.
